Well, I tried recording with one of the dynamic mics. Have to set the mic in volume all the way up, but I get usable sound that way. Normal voice is soft, loud voice can peak the needle (why doe we still call it a needle in this led bar age?).

However I get a heavy echo. Sounds like I am speaking in a large aircraft hanger with the PA turned all the way up. Especially strange because the micro is a so-called super cardioid.

Not picking up the computer fans however. So it must be working, maybe the echo effect is do to the level control being turned all the way up.

I agree re: USB mics. :-)
My thoughts were more in direction of external mics for DSLRs and videocams.

Ah, Jostein, as you may remember, I do some analog stuff as well. I have all that software and more. BUT, I want to have the capability to mix in stuff from the analog end also, so an actual analog mixer would be nice. I can use it with the tape recorders as well.

I will have to look at those slide show programs, but remember PowerPoint slides are more like opaque projector slides than photographic slides. The PowerPoint presentation I did was about basic exposure, 2/3's of the slides were textual. The others were photos to illustrate a point most with arrows added to direct the viewer to what was being talked about.

The sound was short comments, for someone who was viewing the presentation on their own. Unfortunately, as I said I did not have the time to get it right, I was burning the CD's at 6pm for the 7pm meeting. I did eventually find my box of adapters in a gym bag on the floor of the closet. What can I say, getting stuff put out of sight for that darn annual inspection of the apartment sometimes involves short cuts.

Mic wise all my microphones are quite a bit better than those USB mics, not to mention those plug into your laptop toy mics. If I wind up doing much in the way of computer voice recording I will want to get a serious studio type mic, sometimes you can get them on half off sale from the musicians supply outfits here in the states.

Tom,
I seriously recommend you to look at some dedicated sound recording and editing software. There are at least two well-reputed freewares out there, Audacity and Wavosaur. They provide slightly different functions, but both have decent noise curbing algorithms, for example.

Re: the preamp issue I believe you'd be better off buying a mic that plugs directly to your PC and do the mixing in software.

Instead of using PP you may also want to consider a dedicated slide show editing program. The two most serious contenders are ProShow from http://www.photodex.com and Wings from http://www.avstumpfl.com/en The latter has a freeware version. It will allow creation of standalone .exe files, but not traditional autorun DVDs. However it does allow crossfading of soundtracks for example. Both programs have timeline-based editing interface which are fast and comprehensible to work with. Personally I like the Wings interface best, but use ProShow because the paid version is more bang for the bucks than the paid version of Wings.

But tastes differ. Hope you find a solution that suits you.

Citizen, as far as I know, uses a solar cell to keep the watch charged. Seiko has a tiny generator in it. Both are supposedly known not to last forever. In the five year range I hear. Some of the Chinese automatic watches come from the factory unlubricated, the claim being that they will wear out in 5-6 years, but they get fewer warranty returns (one year)caused by excessive oil that way. It kind of seems like 5 years is where it is at.

Of course, most folks will replace their watches before then. Not too many of us are like me, and wearing the same watch after almost 20 years. I am even thinking of buying a new replacement movement for the Benrus. Being a quartz watch I can get a new movement for $10 or so. I also understand that their are 10 year life batteries available, but no one stocks them because they of course make money replacing batteries every 2-3 years.

Hi Tom,
A couple of years ago I got a Citizen watch that is solar powered. Since then I know both Seiko and Casio have produced similar tech. I believe the Casios have digital displays, but the others are proper ones.

Should save you the trouble of both mechanical maintenance and battery shifts. :-)

I have to get it together to take another look at the 200b's. Seems like everything around here is breaking at the same time. Actually, it is just that they are not getting fixed and are piling up because of that. Unfortunately, this computer, the truck, and the photography club have higher priorities right now.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Any chance that the wire in the connection cube got loose? I had a situation after rebuilding my battery pack that it would not flash. Using a continuity tester I found that something was not connected properly inside the little cube. I had another connector and resoldered that on the battery and it started working fine and been working fine since.

Simply a listing I found on eBay. Try searching for:

ink air-filter

I had later found a place in the USA that sold them but their listing is no longer there. Actually, you ought to be able to get the filters from anyplace that sells CISS hardware, although you may have to call them. They are real cheap, the postage is likely to be more than a couple of sets.

Furthermore, you can break them apart and clean the tiny plastic screen in them, but it is handy to have a spare set so you can simply swap them and keep printing, and clean the screens at your leisure.
